God Liver Podcast
An after-breakfast experimental podcast on art and stuff
S2E13 - Paris, Episode 4/4
Palais de Tokyo (and why Painting is all you are)
Welcome to the closing episode of our podcast series from Paris.
This time we make an incursion into the Palais de Tokyo to encounter the in-your-face, immersive work of Swiss painter Miriam Cahn. Alongside Cahn's many-sided exhibition, we discuss cell tower antennas disguised as pine trees, the inner critic, UFO movies, artists and age, and penises.
At the airport, in the passenger boarding bridge, just seconds before taking off, and saying à plus tard to the City of Light, we still manage to squeeze a deep conversation on whether an overdose of painting is really possible and why all you are and all you ever do is Painting.
S2E12 - Paris, Episode 3/4
Centre Pompidou (and onion soup)
Broadcasting once more from Paris, an emblem for modern art, revolutions and onions cooked in beef stock and gruyère.
In this mini-episode, we visit the Centre Georges Pompidou, where we revere the quiet power of still life painting, and do our thing in a corridor between two large works by Immendorff and Sigmar Polke.
Below the paintings (and grub) we talk about in the program.

Musée d'Orsay (and nibbles borrowed from the hotel breakfast table)
Welcome to part two of our God Liver podcast from Paris!
This time we visit the (unpronounceable) musée d'Orsay, and shoot the breeze in front of the Courbets and the Manets.
Misha vents out his affections with poor Cézanne and Raisa breaks the law in the café, next to the big clock.
Below the paintings featured on the program
(note: Cézanne's painting looks much better in photo)

The Louvre (and all the rest we don't have in Kittilä)
Broadcasting live from our trip in Paris!
Welcome to part 1 of our podcast series on Paris, its museums, its onion soup, its Seine, its breakfast tables, its wondrous paintings. In this episode we (eventually) encounter some of the best well-known paintings in the world and chat live right in front of them at the Louvre, the former Royal Palace where kings in white wigs have been skipping around in underwear and Robert Langdon would be chased by a naughty albino. Below pictures of the paintings that get mentioned in the podcast.

S2E9 - The Jingle
- with Kalle and Pauliina Turakka Purhonen
In this new episode we meet at our breakfast table in Sirkka none other than artists Kalle and Pauliina Turakka Purhonen. The conversation meanders through Pauliina's grandmother's fake teeth, 'pyllyhuone' at Galleria Raekallio in Pöntsö, an intense painting experiment with Pauliina in the studio and our incipient working collaboration with her, Kalle’s en plein air painting endeavours and use of spirits (viinaa), the ****ed up painting session, the stories behind Perhonen Pizza and Avajaisbodari, Pauliinas's artistic liaison with Tapani Kokko, and the ebbs and flows of the full catastrophe living: raising a family and making art.
S2E6 - The Mighty North
In this episode of God Liver, Misha talks longer and Raisa talks louder - Roveniemi's difficult beauty - Lapin taiteilijaseura pikkujoulu and the cultural ambience of the north - the missed opportunity with the raw cakes - Miami Vice/He-Man party - reflections on Australian art's bravado.

S2E5 - Winter is Upon Us
In this episode: the dark waters of winter; canvasses that feel like gliding on ice and chafing on pumice; Jyrki Siukonen and the physicality of a painting; Rankka's and Huuto's peculiar sisterhood; the corner that makes music by itself; what is the point of everything; painting in a fridge; and for dessert, the magic of letting go. |
S2E4 - Insipid and Vapid
One of the most insipid, irrelevant and vapid episodes in the short history of podcasting.
If, despite this clear warning, you still insist on listening to the episode -at your own risk- you will hear why it might not be such a good idea to throw runny foods at defenseless old paintings; you’ll find Misha spicing the conversation with words in Finnish; us paraphrasing Radiohead; singing along the tune of Once Upon a Time… Life (Olipa kerran… elämä); trying to resolve 'live' a conflict of interests befallen in the studio as we try to navigate the course of our new set of paintings; describing what mössö Misha had for breakie; and revealing the emptiness of all things, nothing more than, through the obscure text of the Heart Sutra.
But you have been warned.

Season 2 Episode 3 (S2E3) - Kiasma Hangover and Onegin
In this long-overdue new episode of God Liver: memoirs of a Kiasma dream, the two-sided tree and beginning a novel series of paintings, introducing our new sponsor, darkness and our work in Korundi's exterior façade, coming from the right place and 'seeing it working' in painting, Raisa weather report of this in-between season, and how good to be here (and not in Luleå).

Season 2 Episode 1 (S2E1) - MÄNTTÄ
Welcome to this first episode of the second season of our God Liver podcast!!
Broadcasting from Mänttä, we speak about the ins-and-outs of our art residency here connected to toilet paper.
The episode follows a Pulp Fiction-like fragmented narrative.
We uncover our hopes and fears of our paintings making it across the pond to an art fair in the city of Sonny Crockett, Miami. As is already customary in this podcast, we delve into the Philosophy of Painting section to consider very very very super-deep stuff. And what else? We went for an art tour in Mänttä. We visited the Mänttä Art Festival - Kuvataideviikot, enjoyed artist Janne Laine's open studio day and its assorted cakes, the Realm of Fine Arts - Kuvateiteen Valtakunta 2022 exhibiton with works of recent graduates from six art schools across Finland, and more...

In-Between Seasons Episode - The Gap
An Episode in which Misha decides to have a bad day and Raisa confesses a mystical experience she had on a train.
We ask what is means a holiday when you are an artist; Kalle -Raisa's dad- make a surprising star appearance; and if you make it through the first twenty or so minutes of höpö-höpö you might be able to listen to something more substantial about what's worthy and valuable in having faith in the magic of art.

Special Episode - Live from the Midnight Sun Film Festival in Södänkylä.
Welcome to this exceptional, highly experimental, super exciting episode from the village of Sodankylä, where last weekend came about the 35th edition of the Midnight Sun Film Festival, established in the 80's by a bunch of Finnish film-makers, Kaurismäki brothers amongst them.
The episode is a dynamic conversation with the peoples, the soundscape and the scenery of the nightless Film Festival in Sodankylä. Guest-stars, French actor and film-maker Mathieu Amalric, and Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz tell us their impressions about hanging out in Lapland and being part of the Festival. We also talk to Finnish actor, and Sodankylä Film Festival regular, Tommi Korpela.
In our rambles around the village we come across many familiar faces who, like us, have made it to Sodankylä to join in the vibe and enjoy good cinema. The conversation gets enriched through contributions by our local Lapland art crew Pekka Kumpulainen, Mauri Lähdesmäki, Helena Junttila, Mette Ylikorva, Joonas Martikainen, Eemil Karila and Ville Rinne. Other cinema-lovers have travelled all the way to the North to be part of this unique happening: we chat with Festival-goers artists Marja Helander, Meiju Niskala, Laura Tahvanainen, her partner Joonas, and Ville Jolanki. Aki Juopperi and Co. delights us all with their street pop-up vegan food stall.
The meandrous, eclectic conversation delves into four movies: Mathieu Amalric's The Blue Room (2014), Finnish productions The Blind Man Who didn't Want to See Titanic (2021) and Hytti Nro 6 (2021); and an obscure German film of the 60's in black and white, a "hysterically surreal monument with a vengeance."

Episode 14, 9.6.2022 - Norwegian Breakfast - Part I - with artists Tanja Koistinen and Savu Korteniemi
Our podcast about Art and Stuff. On this occasion, with very little of the former and a whole lot of the later.
In great company, from Kirkenes.

Breakfast table and a recent drawing by Raisa Raekallio
Norwegian Breakfast - Part II - with Jasmina Bosnjak A sequel of our Norwegian Breakfast conversations from Kirkenes. In this shorter episode, we speak with Troms and Finnmark cultural supernova Jasmina Bosnjak, about the elephant in the room. And we review, rather superficially to be honest, the absolutely handsome publication Arctic Art Newspaper. |
Episode 13, 4.6.2022 - Pikes and Paintings
Can smelling a piece of paper take you 20 years back in time to an obscure art class in Athens? How was it that you say ‘ahven’ in English? Why no one told us how to make teasers before? We talk about the appreciation of painting and the phenomenon of delay in transference of presence from the studio to the gallery. Plus the worst doctor jokes you’ll ever hear. Ladies, gentlemen, anything beyond and in-between, get a grip, this is God Liver. |
Episode 12, 26.5.2022 - Yesterday - with Anu Välitalo
In this episode we sit with our friend, graphic artist Anu Välitalo in probably the most dazzling flat of all Krunuunhaka in Helsinki. We talk about the opening of our exhibition in galleria Huuto with its unutterable name; morphing old saunas in Finland; Anu’s recent series of drawings; cancel culture... We provide down-to-earth examples of the forced ways of being natural and improvising in the world, ventilate our opinions about grant applications, and do little more than to mention the film ‘Everywhere Everything All at Once’. All of it, as usual, with a soundtrack of cutlery clanks, nibbling of strawberries and sipping coffee.

Episode 11, 20.5.2022 - Please don't Bang the Table!
It's Friday in Lapland! And Friday is Pooooodcast Day! Today we talk about... not having anything to say; we digress about the documentary film The Divided Brain (while we have Iain Mcgilchrist sitting placidly on our sofa); we discuss our recent raid in the land of works on paper; and we open up our feelings about our upcoming exhibition in Galleria Huuto in Helsinki next week. |
Episode 10, 13/5/2022 - The Jelly
We are back in the mics after some time... In this podcast we suddenly learn by talking about it that our paintings are darker than we thought; we (well, Raisa) belts out Romania's Eurovision Song Contest entry of last night; del Val, confused by an unconscious bunch of emotions, makes some conceited remarks; the taking off of our career as collectors: our first art-piece ever purchased; and Rovaniemi post-corona amenities. |

This week in our God Liver podcast introducing Raisa and the Raisins (Raisa Raekallio, Misha del Val and our dear friend from Rovaniemi Pekka Kumpulainen). We started off as a music band, because we love the name of the band, bu haven't made any music yet. Raisa and the Raisins, live from our kitchen table in the Arctic, talking straight about making paintings in a threesome, losing teeth and the myth of Martin Kippenberger.

Episode 4, 22/1/2022 - 'Conversation with Artist Solveig Ovanger and Skipping Around Tromsø'
We swap kitchen-tables to broadcast from the Paris of the North (since we didn't make it to see Ilya Repin's exhibition in the Petit Palace). Gently-spoken, Tromsø-based artist Solveig Ovanger talks with us about her art and her sensitivity for materials. Sharing the other mic, you see we only have two, Raisa and Misha get nice and close enough to feel each other's warmth.

Episode 2, 7/1/2022 - Bilbao painting scene, and how a photo of Misha almost provokes a fire in Raisa's house
In today's podcast we introduce the work of painters Al Daw (Sheffiled), Damaris Pan (Bilbao) and Ander Sagastiberri (Bilbao). And we do a bit of conversational jazz, you know, how we met in Greece many many years ago and how a photo of Misha almost provokes a fire in the house. Towards the end of the program we discuss one of our latest paintings 'As Above So Below, As Below So Above', pictured below.

WeeEpisode 1, 31/12/2021 - what we did in 2021, plus towns and villages
In this podcast, our first ever, we delve into our shared artistic memories of 2021. Also included in this podcast our kitchen table, the will of painting, corona coughing, the making of 'As Above So Below' painting and why the US is not a proper name for a country.
It's quite bad, please do not listen!
(Well, no that any of the other episodes are any better)
